My Mom and Throw Rugs!

As the new Executive Director for the Foundation for Senior Care, a non-profit designed to assist seniors in living independently in the greater Fallbrook area, I knew that having throw rugs around the house of a senior is not SAFE!

How often would I tell my mom to pick up the throw rugs she had around the house! And her reply was, "Oh, I know where they are and I won't fall. I keep them there to keep that area clean because I always walk in that spot!" How often have you told your elderly parents the same thing?

I felt like a broken record and that I was nagging her all the time. Fortunately for her (and me) she never fell but she did trip numerous times. I credit her balance to all the tennis she played until she was 81! But not all seniors have good balance.

Please highly "suggest" to your parents to get rid of those throw rugs today! I was even so bold as to tell my mom -- you will fall and I won't be happy!

My mom lived a good long life until last summer when she died at 90 and a 1/2!
More on my mom and her life will be a regularly part of this blog!
